EU = peace, freedom and greatness?

Per Bylund recently published an article on LRC, about what the E.U. is all about. According to its fanatic disciples, the E.U. is about peace, freedom and greatness. As a citizen of the E.U. (although I am no longer living in what I would like to call "E.U. proper"*) I challenge that view.

I think it's sad (but not strange) that the so-called non-socialist parties in Sweden, and in particular Moderaterna (the Conservatives) and Folkpartiet (the Liberal Party) consider the E.U. a free-market and peace-promoting institution. Like Bylund argues for in his article, the E.U. may very well be the opposite.

The E.U. is run by politicians, and politicians do not give up power and control voluntarily. What politicians say, and what politicians do, are two different things. The brilliant economist Frederic Bastiat once called the French parliament in Paris a "law factory". That could, sadly, be said about the European parliament too.

Read Bylund's article here.

*Sadly, Norway is heavily influenced by what goes on in Brussels and Strasbourg, and, although not a member of the E.U. formally, much of what goes on here is still controlled by the E.U.
